WICU12 News – Disaster Preparedness Seminar

Disaster Preparedness SeminarSeptember 20, 2010, 9:42 pm

Whether it’s a forest fire or earthquake, a disaster can happen anytime and anywhere.  on Monday, members of the Erie County Emergency Management met with the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)  to discuss ways local families can prepare for such incidents.  "just because something doesn’t happen, doesn’t mean it can’t in the future," said Erie County Emergency Management Coordinator Dale Robinson.  "just because we didn’t see it before, doesn’t mean it won’t happen."  according to Robinson, a major disaster for Erie in the summer time, is flooding.  just last year, the mayor declared a disaster emergency after heavy rain caused severe flooding throughout the county.  As we get closer to winter, ice storms become another hazard for local residents.  Emergency workers say the key dealing with these situations, is to preparation.   "get a kit inside your house to sustain each person for three days," said Jerry Damico of CERT.  "if it’s a major disaster, have somewhere you could meet your family if you get separated."  along with the kits, emergency workers say that it’s important to develop a communication plan for your family.   "Disasters don’t happen when everyone is at home," said Robinson.  they happen when the kids are at school and you’re at work, or at the grocery store….so we need to make sure that we have a way of communication and a way to say if something bad happens, this is where we’re going to meet."
