ARCADIA, Wisconsin (WXOW) – Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle declares a state of emergency in Trempealeau county.
Rising water there forced the evacuation of nearly two thirds of the people in the city of Arcadia.
The mayor of Arcadia, John Kimmel, declared a state of emergency for the city due to flooding early Thursday morning. No traffic is being allowed into the city other than emergency vehicles.
(PRESS RELEASE) – the downtown area of Arcadia is completely flooded at this time. People living in low-lying areas are urged to evacuated. the city will be sounding its Civil Defense siren for this emergency according to Arcadia Chief of Police Grzadzielewski.
According to Deputy Fire Chief mark Finner around 3am Thursday morning Arcadia had already received more than 4 inches of rain. At that time officials started evacuating homes. Finner says streets were already flooding causing them to collapse.
Finner said, “The creek basin covers a pretty big basin so we received serve flooding and roads washed out and it actually went over the dike and got into the city of Arcadia.”
According to the Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs downtown Arcadia is under 1 to 3 feet of water.
Responders are rescuing flood victims with boats and the National Guard has deployed 3 to 5 ton trucks to assist with evacuations as needed.
Arcadia officials say they expect the flooding to rise later Thursday afternoon because of flooding of the Trempealeau river.
There has been a shelter set up at the National Guard Armory for residents impacted by the flooding
