Local business and organizations were awarded for their participation in the Freedom from Hunger Food Drive in a ceremony Wednesday.

From late June to August, the food drive raised 36.26 tons of food area food assistance programs.It was sponsored by BankIowa, Linn County Board of Supervisors Witwer Trust and United way of East Central Iowa.

In total, 45 business or organizations participated in the food drive. Community donations were also accepted at Kernels games in late June.

Rockwell Collins was awarded for collecting the most food–20,595 pounds. other top collectors were US Cellular, Mercy Medical Center, the City of Cedar Rapids and Linn County.

The food drive is directed at fighting hunger during the summer months when demand peaks and supplies dwindle.

Earlier this month, the Gazette reported that the need at area food pantries has nearly tripled since the flood of 2008.

Freedom from Hunger stated that in Linn County, nearly 3,600 households seek emergency food assistance each month.

After 8 years, the annual food drive has raised 232.51 tons of food.
