Moderate Earthquake hits Peruvian Amazons

LIMA (Xinhua) – an earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale hit on Friday the Peruvian Amazons region of Ucayali, some 550 kilometers east of Lima, without no immediate reports of damage or injury.

The earthquake occurred at 2:01 p.m. local time (1902 GMT), 43 kilometers northeast of Pucallpa city with a depth of 146 kilometers, Peru’s Geophysics Institute (IGP) said.

The IGP added that it also monitored a smaller earthquake in the nearby departments of Junin and Huanuco.

Meanwhile, Peru’s Civil Protection National Institute (Indeci) said that so far there have been no reports of injury or property damage.

This was the second earthquake registered in Peru in the last 36 hours. an earthquake of magnitude 5.7 hit the Tambo de Mora locality in Chincha province in the early morning on Thursday, some 150 kilometers south of Lima.

Peru sits on the so-called Fire Belt of the Pacific. Each year it registers more than 1,200 earthquakes on average, 10 percent of which are above magnitude 5.
