Last Wednesdays 5.0 earthquake took everyone off guard in Ottawa and the surrounding areas. According to Natural Resources Canada, Ottawa is located within what is classified as the Western Quebec Seismic Zone and is one of the five major earthquake zones in Canada. Even though we dont feel them, there is a tremor every five days on average this region that stretches from Montreal to Temiscaming as well as the Laurentians and eastern Ontario. The improbability of feeling a quake has led to many people not quite knowing what do to when the earth moves under their feet. On June 23, it was fairly clear that most give in to their natural flight instinct.According to experts, trying to get out of the building is the last thing to do.Thats wrong, said Maureen Cassia, a trainer with the community emergency program for the City of Coquitlam in B.C. The program, locally known as HEROS, provides emergency preparedness seminars to residents and businesses throughout the Vancouver suburb. Please see the July 1 EMC for full earthquake coverage.
