An earthquake of 5.9 magnitude on the Richter scale in the Washington area, which was felt in new York, forced the evacuation of the Pentagon, said the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The earthquake was detected at 13.51 local time (17.51 GMT) at a depth of 6 miles.
The quake, which lasted a few seconds, caused the evacuation of the Pentagon, officials said.
The epicenter was located in the state of Virginia (northeast), about 15 km from the town of Mineral and 6 km deep, as measured by U.S. Provisional Seismological Institute.
New York was also affected by the quake, which led to the departure of people to the streets and the evacuation of government buildings, according to AFP reporters.
