In Fortran, what does IOSTAT = 17 mean?

"I/O statement not allowed on direct file." is what error code 17 translates to. I'm not sure what that means. You have to figure out which I/O statement in your code caused that error. It's apparently not legal on a direct file. Hope that helps. What i/o statement comes before that error?
